This bowl is made using the traditional method of segmented turning, where Carl carefully cuts, shapes, and joins multiple pieces of premium Hawaiian koa to form a single turning blank. This technique allows him to use koa efficiently while showcasing the natural variety of the grain — from golden curl to deep reddish-brown tones.

Once the segments are assembled, the blank is mounted on the lathe. Carl then hand-turns the shape using traditional gouges and scrapers, slowly refining the curve of the rim, the walls, and the base.

Every surface is sanded through multiple grits and finished with coats of hand-rubbed tung oil, which brings out the chatoyance (shimmer) and rich depth that koa is famous for.

Features:

  • Crafted using precision segmented turning

  • Made from 100% Hawaiian curly koa

  • Hand-turned on the lathe using traditional tools

  • Finished with natural tung oil for a deep, durable gloss

  • Food-safe finish

  • One-of-a-kind grain patterns in every piece

These bowls take many hours of cutting, gluing, turning, and finishing work — each one is a true Hawaiian heirloom.
